The depths of the sea symbolize the underworld, the abode of the dead. Scriptures depict the waters as the home of the Rephaim, the destroyers, and whales and sea monsters are used to represent devils and God's wrath. The anguish of death and God's anger can be likened to the sea, deeps, floods, and billows. See “Images,” no. 82.
