Religion, Conviction
That rule of admitting communicants which, fully observed, would naturally bring it [to] pass that the bigger part of communicants would be without that fitness which that very rule requires, cannot be a divine rule. But the rule of admitting all that have moral sincerity is such a rule as that. If such a rule as this be universally put in execution, then all natural men that have present convictions of conscience to make 'em morally serious must be admitted. But the conviction and common religion, if it don't issue in conversion, as was observed, in a little time vanishes away; but still all those that were admitted are left in the communion of the church without moral sincerity. (WJE 25:371)
