In our fallen state, we need garments to hide our nakedness and lost primitive glory. God has provided clothing for mankind, which represents Jesus Christ and his righteousness. Skin coats, fleeces of sheep, and silkworm clothing represent the righteousness of Christ, who was dumb before his shearers. The spiritual clothing we have by Christ is represented by the flax, a small, weak, feeble plant that grew up as a root from a dry ground. Christ, through great sufferings, yields his righteousness, which is as fine linen, clean, and white, and presents us without spot to the Father. These garments represent the righteousness of Jesus Christ and his righteousness, which is as clean and white as linen and presents us without spot to the Father. See “Images,” nos. 2, 35, 46.
