Merit: Worthiness, Justification, Obedience

In "Miscellanies," no 829 concerning merit, Edwards notes that Arminians maintain that one is not justified by their own merit, yet they accept that one's virtue and obedience is looked upon as some moral goodness of their person, which means that they are, to some degree, justified by their own worthiness.

Indeed, there is a sort of merit or worthiness that this scheme of justification don't necessarily suppose, and that is that sort that is peculiar to Christ as a divine person, whose worthiness differed from that of all others, in that what he offered to God was what originally was not due by a debt of subjection; but it implies fully the highest possible kind of merit or worthiness of a creature, though not the highest degree of that kind. - WJE 18:540
