Necessary Covering

We, in our fallen state, need garments to hide our nakedness (having lost our primitive glory) which were needless in our state of innocency. And whatsoever God has provided for mankind to clothe themselves with, seems to represent Jesus Christ and his righteousness: whether it be anything made of skin, as the coats of skins that God made our first parents represented the righteousness of Christ; or the fleeces of sheep do represent the righteousness of him who is the Lamb of God, and who was dumb as a sheep before his shearers. And the beautiful clothing from the silkworm, that that worm yields us at his death, represents the glorious clothing we have for our souls by the death of him who became a man, who is a worm; and the son of man, who is a worm, and who said he was a worm and no man [Psalms 22:6].

And the flax with which we are clothed seems well to represent the spiritual clothing we have by Christ. That small, weak, feeble and unadorned plant well represents him who grew up as a tender plant, as a root out [of] a dry ground, wherein was no form or comeliness [Isaiah 53:2]. It is exceedingly bruised and broken, and beaten with many blows, and so yields us its coat to be our clothing. And Christ, through exceeding great sufferings, yields us his righteousness, that is as fine linen, clean and white, and presents us without spot to the Father. - WJE 11:63
